Rajbiraj flights unlikely from June 15

Rajbiraj, 14 June : Minister of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation Rabindra Adhikari had said that Rajbiraj Airport in Saptari would conduct regular flights from June 15. However, looking at the condition of the airport, the chances are very slim.

The airport is unlikely to come into operation from the given deadline for want of necessary preparations. “No preparations have been carried out to conduct regular flights. One kilometre road from the departure lounge and waiting lounge to Kunauli road are yet to be repaired. We have yet to set up ticket counter,” said branch manager of Sri Airlines, Rajbiraj, Suresh Mallik.

Airport chief Ramekwal Mahato said they would conduct regular flights after completing all preparations within a week. Inaugurated by late Ganeshman Singh, the airport came into operation in 1959. But it halted its services from 1995 due to lack of blacktopped runway and poor infrastructure.

The upgraded airport was inaugurated jointly by Minister Adhikari, Federal Socialist Forum-Nepal Chairperson Upendra Yadav and former minister of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation Jitendra Narayan Dev on May 24.
